In 2020, the Social Security Administration (SSA) closed its field offices in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, many SSI recipients had difficulty reporting changes in their finances that could affect the amount of their benefits, and others experienced major overpayments due to processing delays. Even as SSA offices remained closed, the agency eventually resumed assessing overpayments to SSI recipients and reducing their benefits.
